Abstract
This document outlines the approach of the United States Department of Transportation towards automated vehicles. Notably, it describes a framework of risk management for States and manufacturers along the path to full commercial integration of automated vehicles. This framework emphasizes the importance of providing clarity to the public regarding the distinctions between various stages of testing and deployment of automated vehicles. It also highlights the commitment of the US DOT to supporting the safe, reliable, efficient, and cost-effective integration of automation into the broader transportation system. This policy builds upon previous versions of this report. It incorporates feedback from manufacturers, infrastructure owners and operators, commercial motor carriers, the bus transit industry, and State as well as local governments.
