Abstract
This report reviewed the current state of knowledge regarding supplemental driver training and online training programs, both nationally and internationally. In particular, topic content and delivery methods of these programs were compared. A total of 56 supplemental programs were identified by researchers and reviewed for the United States study, and 59 programs were identified and reviewed for the international study. Additionally, 40 online basic driver education programs were identified and reviewed using the same approach by researchers.

It was concluded both U.S. and international supplemental programs followed similar training approaches and addressed comparable topics. Also, the number of supplemental programs in the U.S. and internationally suggested there is a high demand for driver training that goes beyond the knowledge and skills of the basic driver education in the United States. In terms of online basic driver education programs, research showed course content was generally consistent, however courses adopted a variety of training approaches, primarily determined by the amount of student engagement required. Finally, researchers observed a significant lack of oversight and regulation of these training programs and recommended future research focus on scientific evaluation of the effects of both supplemental and online basic driver education on young driver safety.
