GHSA’s 2023 Young Drivers and Traffic Fatalities: 20 Years of Progress on the Road to Zero
This document analyzed 20 years of Fatality Analysis Reporting System (FARS) data to determine if the fatal crash and crash rates for drivers 15-20 years old declined from 2002 to 2021. The data analysis found that fatal crashes involving a young driver decreased by 38.1% during the 20-year period, while fatal crashes involving an older driver increased by 7.5%. Even more striking is that young driver fatalities dropped 44.7%, while older driver fatalities rose 11%. In 2002, young drivers accounted for 14.8% of all driver fatalities. In 2021, that rate fell to 7.9%, a nearly 50% decrease.
