Abstract
This document describes the results of a study of young driver behavior in relation to distracted driving, conducted by the American Automobile Association (AAA). Event-based data recorders were placed in the vehicles of 50 participating families at the outset of the learner stage for teen drivers. The recorders were used to monitor behaviors during practice sessions. The data revealed that, similar to adults, teenagers engaged in a wide variety of distracted behaviors while driving. However, there were some evidence teenagers tempered these behaviors in setting that placed greater demands on the driver, such as rainy conditions and bad weather.
