Abstract
This factsheet summarizes research and data showing benefits associated with requiring all new drivers under the age of 21 to be subject to GDL when they apply for a driver’s license. The data showed novice drivers have an increased risk of collision due to their lack of experience driving. Further, patterns of crash involvement among teens aged 18 to 20 years were very similar to patterns among 16 to 17 year olds with high crash rates which rapidly decline with experience. These results indicated the benefits of GDL could be enhanced in jurisdictions where novice drivers over the age of 18 do not have to be subject to the GDL framework.
